Indian telecom, information communications and entertainment sectors are increasing exponentially in size and sophistication, especially in use of new technologies – mobile, social media and cloud computing. Besides being a leading IT superpower, according to SIPRI’s latest reports, India is among the world’s largest markets for defence products. The Indian civil security market is expected to grow from USD 8 billion to approximately USD 20 billion by 2020. Exploring and implementing long-term sustainable solutions in this complex field is vital to promote India’s security and economic growth. As a leading innovator in the sectors of IT as well as civil security, Sweden has much to offer to India; not just as a supplier but as a partner in co-developing technologies, processes and equipment in IT and Security. What conditions would facilitate such a partnership between India and Sweden and what results would deliver?

Sweden and India have a long tradition of cooperation in the field of health. From a cooperation based on development aid, the collaboration has evolved to a more dynamic and mutually beneficial alliance. Sweden has a lot to offer India when it comes to organizing healthcare be it creating a system for healthy mothers and babies, offering universal coverage to its population or care of the elderly. India is also emerging as a hub for cost-effective R & D and clinical trials. Could Indian and Swedish companies collaborate to find solutions in some important areas of healthcare that may be neglected such as infectious diseases like TB etc?
Another important area that is beginning to be explored globally is the benefits to patients of combining the results of progress of modern medicine with the proven practices of India’s many traditional systems of medicine, especially Ayurveda, based on a holistic approach to health.

“It is often argued that India, with its wildly pluralistic society, fractious democratic political system, and boisterous independent media, has the potential to show the world’s other emerging markets that ethnic homogeneity and authoritarianism aren’t the only—or even the best—path to successful economic development.”
This is the vision proposed by McKinsey and Company in ‘Reimagining India’ a collection of essays debating the economical-political construct that is the Indian business environment. India is widely recognized as one of the two emerging Asian giants which no global company that has a long-term perspective can afford to ignore. The challenge is that the so called ‘democratic dividend’ of the huge young population should have the necessary skills and values. Sustainability and secure access to affordable energy are other challenges that India must address. Sweden shares many vital values with India such as democracy and respect for diversity and a commitment to protecting the environment. How can it be a partner in India’s journey to inclusive growth? What, if anything, would it stand to gain from such a partnership for progress with India?
This is followed by a lunch ’designed’ by Saransh Goila , India’s youngest celebrity chef who will share his vision of ‘Re-Imagining Indian Cuisine 2025′ and his favourite recipes.

There are many examples of Swedish business flourishing in India by focusing on India’s specific needs. Swedish company OMC Power is revamping the consumer market in the rural areas of India, thinking cheap, thinking possible, thinking profitable. Swedish company Truecaller has made India its largest market with 100s of millions of people signing up. In India, the subscriber base of Facebook and LinkedIn together has surpassed 100 million mark; and the mobile Internet user base has surpassed 140 million. How do you tap the Indian consumer? India has unlimited brains and skilled manpower while Sweden has long been a leading innovation nation known for its excellent technology and systems. Can the complementary strengths be combined for a brighter future? Can Sweden and India become partners in progress? Can India be the platform to bring this together?

Varanasi Junction is an art vernissage as well as an Indian cultural theme weekend held in Kista underground bazaar, in the northern suburb of Stockholm. Varanasi Junction is a meeting place that gives visitors a sensory journey to the holy city in India. Varanasi, also known as Benaras, is the oldest city in India and is called the spiritual capital of the country. As such, Varanasi is teeming with history, heritage, chaos and colour. In the city, one can observe the rituals of life and death taking place on the banks of the river Ganges, creating an overwhelming journey of sights, sounds and smells.
The artist Elin Thorsén exhibits her photos, painting and other artwork, inspired by traditional cultural interactions from the swarming Varanasi. Guest lecturers Willy Pfändtner and Stig Lundgren will speak about about hinduism, pilgrimages and the holy city as a concept. Both adults and children are welcome to our workshops, where you can write your name in Devnagari (the Hindi script) and create your own art. There will be Indian food and chai in the underground bazaar – once you step down the flight of stairs you will be in Varanasi with all your senses, only on April 26th and 27th. Opening hours are 11-19. Travel by metro t-Bana to Kista, only 20 minutes from Stockholm City.
Entry fee 50 kr.
Hosted by Sydasien and Svensk-Indiska föreningen. Welcome!

A beautiful saree exhibition showcasing different weaving traditions from April 26th to June 8th at Millesgården. This visually unique exhibition will seek to juxtapose traditional Indian textile design and ancient artifacts to enchant visitors. Master craftpersons from Indi a will be there to show their artistry. The question visitors to the exhibition might find themselves asking is : What came first – the saree or the toga?
The answer is ‘Sari’ : it traces its origin back to the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished during 2800–1800 BC.
The saris that will be on display from April 26 to June 26 at Millesgarden, the beautiful sculpture museum of Stockholm are exquisite examples of Indian tradition and craftsmanship that span the entire country. They range from rich silks to the finest muslin and cottons. In addition to being exemplary examples of age-old skills, the saris also give interesting insights into the Indian society. The fine fabrics, woven by hand and produced only thanks to the knowledge and tradition passed down from generation to generation even today reveal yet another facet of the unlimited nature of today’s India.
Discover the regal Venkatgiri saris of Andhra Pradesh earlier patronized by the Nizams, the erstwhile rulers of Hyderabad, and the fabulous hand woven Wankhael Sari of Manipur in the northeast, where a loom is a part of every young bride’s dowry. Saris heavy in gold weave or as light as gossamer, ones with exquisite, complicated patterns representing skills passed down through countless generations. Marvel at the intricate tie dying techniques of Rajasthan and Gujarat where tiny mustard seeds or grains of sand are deployed to produce the finest patterns. See rich Tussar silks and rare Muga silk of Assam and saris lovingly embellished with either cotton or metal thread embroidery.
The exhibition covers designs and techniques that date back to the 12th century and beyond. It includes everything from heirloom projects to those that reflect modern trends. Encapsulated in this dazzling display of these timelessly elegant garments, is modern India’s determination to preserve the longevity of the traditional sari while still responding to the demands of the fashion conscious, modern Indian woman.
A must-see for all those who appreciate beautiful craftsmanship and respect traditions.
A bonus for the ‘early bird’ visitors: On April 26 & 27, master craftpersons from India will be at the museum to demonstrate their artistry…
The inauguration starts at 11am on the 26th! We are looking forward to seeing you there!

With a selection of contemporary design objects, studio Design Temple, traces parallel inspirations from India’s past to display the ingenuity of this 5000–year-old civilization.
The art of everyday life from India’s past highlights a synthesis of form, function and material that is embedded into the evolution of their design, over hundreds of years. As an integral part of everyday life, objects act as cultural conveyors. And this visual dialogue between the old and new, throws light on India’s people and their way of life.
Positioned at the crossroad of globalization and an ancient design culture, India Past Forward is fortuitously timed as Twenty-first century India brims with opportunity for the future.
The higher you need to go, the deeper must be the foundation.
With this belief studio Design Temple, presents India Past Forward A visual dialogue between Objects from India’s past and present.

Yoga
We invite all the different Yoga centers and Yoga studios ,their teachers and students, in fact all Stockholmers, children & adults to come and participate in the grand Yoga Event. It is amazing how Yoga has become mainstream in Sweden. We will this day highlight and inform Stockholmers / Swedes of Yoga’s ancient roots and its Indian heritage and that is why we have chosen to do the Event at the most beautiful location of Stockholm – Kungsträdgården. The idea is to spread the yoga mats around the pool of water and make the magic of Yoga come alive! We also hope to provide yoga classes for beginners , for children and the elderly. New and modern expressions of yoga will also be shown.
Indian Cuisine
In addition to Yoga we will show the wonderful diversity of Indian cuisine. Stockholm has approximately 130 Indian restaurants, but most of them have the same fare of cuisine. It would be wonderful to showcase food of the different regions of India like Bengali, Tamilian, Malayalee, Maharashtrian, Punjabi, Gujarati & other regions. This can be a real WOW experience for Stockholmers. Here we would like to invite all the Indian associations in Sweden/Stockholm to come and showcase their regional cuisine. We will have 10 market stands, that will be given for free to associations. Indian Restaurants and commercial food caterers will also be welcome.

In addition we also invite Travel and Tourism operators to set up stall and sell their India destination packages. Design and Crafts to promote Indian designs and craftmanship. This day will take you on a journey to India through its food, dance, music, films and literature, its people and beautiful locations. It aims to shed light on the misgivings that surround India, creating more understanding and knowledge for Swedish people to travel to India. We also want to generate greater interest in Sweden/ Nordic regions, as a great new travel destination for Indians. How can more Indians be attracted to Sweden? Can Bollywood open windows?
Dance
We are also going to present our Dance & Culture. Some of the local dance associations will be given the opportunity to come and perform during that day. The Swedish National Dance Academy and Circus School will also be performing.
INDIAN DANCE – Classical,Folk and Bollywood.
India offers a number of classical Indian dance forms, each of which can be traced to different parts of the country. During Namaste Stockholm we will have many dancers performing various Indian classical and folk dances. The popularity of Indian film industry namely “Bollywood” has not only made Bollywood dance an integral part of the Indian dance forms but also made it immensely popular to global audience. So we bring to you a very interesting mix of all three forms of dances on the 23rd of May running through the day.
Fashion
A fashion show will be held during this day where young fashion designers from India and Sweden will present their creations. A fusion of two worlds will be shown in the most compelling and amusing way with help of colors, tissues and most importantly the imaginations and inspirations of these young designers.
Musical performance

Current global urbanisation trends will result in 70% of the population living in cities by 2050, and given the increasing social and environmental challenges, it is imperative that we learn how best to develop, govern and manage integrated and sustainable cities. Event Details
India understands it has a problem with pollution and is eager to tackle this problem going forward. This is an important reasons for the Indian Governments interest in Scania’s work on biofuels and sustainable transport systems. Swedfund and Scania has now entered into a partnership to produce biofuel from sludge in the city of Nagpur. Nagpur is the pilot city for testing sustainable transport systems and a part of the Indian Governments Smart Cities project.
India is the 7th largest country in the world covering an area of 3.5 million square km and has a population of 1.2 billion. According to 2011 census figures, 30 percent of India’s population lives in urban areas and the rate of urbanization is growing steadily due to the push/pull effects of employment opportunities and the declining viability of the agricultural sector. This in addition to the fact that India now has the 4th largest economy in the world – $4.463 trillion (2011 est.), has resulted in a large and growing movement of goods, services, and people fueled by trade and employment opportunities – almost all of which is powered by fossil fuels.
The increase in emissions form traffic along with inadequate infrastructure facilities is responsible for high levels of local pollutants and GHGs in several of these cities. With the growing air pollution and GHG emissions from the transport sector in cities and at the national level, regulatory agencies will have to find real solutions, especially in terms of managing traffic in cities and freight at the national level.
The City of Nagpur, State of Maharashtra in India, have been appointed a pilot city for solutions to handle urban transport and mobility.
As part of this Scania and Swedfund has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for construction of a biogas plant in the city. The MOU envisions that a biogas plant, creating biogas fuel from waste, will be set up. The biogas will be utilised to run the vehicles, especially city buses.

The majority led government lead by Prime Minister Modi is setting a new vision for India with exceptional development & growth, removal of poverty, boosting infrastructure, cleaning up India, digital India. The new Make in India campaign will boost India’s manufacturing infrastructure and capacity for innovation and is poised for phenomenal growth: new smart cities and industrial clusters, being developed in identified industrial corridors having connectivity, new youth-focused programs and institutions dedicated to developing specialized skills. Most importantly, the Make in India program represents an attitudinal shift in how India relates to investors: not as a permit-issuing authority, but as a true business partner. Sweden companies are global leaders in many of the areas vital for India’s growth. Sweden shares many vital values with India such as democracy and respect for diversity and a commitment to protecting the environment. How can it be a partner in India’s journey to inclusive sustainable growth? How can we set the agenda for a brighter shared future with vision and values?

Event Details
Since the launch of ‘Make in India’ programme in September 2014, Prime Minister Modi’s government has taken multiple steps to make Indian industry more conducive to foreign investment, and to encourage technology sharing between international OEMs and Indian companies. The purpose is to create job opportunities, provide a boost to the manufacturing sector, and better secure India, internally and on the borders.
Swedish industry has a rich history of collaborating with partner countries to help them develop an indigenous industrial base and boost their capabilities. This has invariably been done in a manner that is financially sound and equally beneficial for all parties involved, creating a sustainable legacy that helps the domestic industry grow even after the partnership has ended.
The timing is perfect for Swedish companies to establish relationships with Indian partners to co-develop and jointly manufacture for the Indian market as well as for exports. India’s defence and aerospace industry is undergoing a rapid shift towards the use of high-technology systems, an area where Sweden has traditionally excelled – and Swedish government and industry can play a large role in supporting the Make in India mission.

For maintaining economical growth in a long term perspective the environmental impact must be recognized and reduced.
WORLD-CLASS REGIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
Sweden has been rather successful in a transformation towards a high degree of recycling and use of renewable energy sources. In the Gothenburg region there is a range of collection systems intended to utilise waste and recycle it into new material, used to generate electricity or heat or to produce vehicle fuel.
CHALLANGES CAN BECOME OPPORTUNITIES
India’s challenges in waste management can become opportunities with the right designs, models and technologies. An exchange of knowhow and experiences between Sweden and India in the field of Waste Management would benefit both in developing technological solutions for sustainability and a greener, longer lasting planet.
In this seminary, focusing on waste management system a panel of expertise from different sectors in the city of Gothenburg is invited as well as expertise from India. Together they will talk about and explore the possibilities and challenges of waste management in sustainable future cities.
