This unique 24-hour hackathon will bring Swedish and Indian university students together to rethink problems and inspire innovation in areas of common interest. The Hackathon will begin with a general presentation of the overarching event itself and suggest stimulating group work topics—from smart cities to connected citizens, from farming to healthcare—which the students can tackle in their group work. The participants will then have the opportunity to present their own plans and form teams based on individual interests and skills. The most innovative ideas will be awarded with a prize.

The government of India has taken on the task of developing skill centers and knowledge hubs that encompass entire knowledge ecosystems. This effort has been integral to ensuring the availability of skilled manpower in the aim to fulfill the objectives of the Make in India initiative. In the same vein, the government has launched the National Skill Mission in order to create a large pool of skilled workers with the help of the private sector.

Sweden offers top-of-the-line education facilities and specialized training. Sweden is also currently investing in attracting Indian students to pursue higher education in Sweden. The next step is to help these students find work with Swedish companies in India and abroad. During this session India Unlimited will bring these students and Swedish companies together and present the opportunities that Skill India provides for them.

Swedish companies in India are positioned to make a significant contribution to Skill India as most of these companies already provide technical training for their employees. Could this process be scaled up as a CSR initiative to strengthen the skills of young Indians? Can we even envision a Sweden-India Institute of Technology?

Despite the difference in size, both India and Sweden share many challenges in our respective energy transitions and have a lot to learn from each other. This is reflected by the collaboration on new and renewable energy between our countries.

India’s key role in the establishment and implementation of the International Solar Alliance, launched at COP 21 in Paris by Prime Minister Modi, is inspiring to many around the world. Reaching the milestone of 5500MW of solar installed capacity India is proof of the ambitions to move fast forward toward.  Sweden has a long history in electrification of the energy sector. Electricity was introduced already in 1893, the first electric train in 1915 and an east west transmission grid in 1922. The technological development has continued. Smart transmission grids based of HVDC and FACTS was introduced in the early 1950: ies, areas where Swedish industry today is in a world leading position. All Swedish households and industries are connected to the national electricity grid. This in combination with fossil free electricity production has resulted in the lowest CO2 emission per capita in OECD. These shared ambitions and experiences is in line with our shared goals to achieve an ecologically, cost efficient and secure supply of energy.

Sweden and the Swedish Energy Agency has launched the India-Sweden Innovations’ Accelerator program with the objective to support and promote business relations by matching energy-related innovations and entrepreneurs. The collaboration also includes a Research and Innovation Programme on Smart Grids. Expert teams lead by STRI – High Voltage Testing and Consulting, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and Maksus group of Entrepreneurs are engaged with a mission to define and establish micro-grid pilots. Initially this is to meet the priorities to reduce the dependency for diesel at the Andaman Islands, set by the Government of India, but will also be of relevance for scaling up new solutions on main-land India.

Even though the International Monetary Fund cut its growth outlook for India for this fiscal year, the country is still on track to remain the world’s fastest-growing large economy. The prediction for India’s GDP growth for the year ending March 31, 2016 is 7.3%. However the forecast for the following 12 months is still 7.5%. This figure has not changed since July. “Growth will benefit from recent policy reforms, a consequent pickup in investment, and lower commodity prices,” the IMF said in its latest report on the world’s economic outlook.

The Make in India campaign will boost India’s manufacturing infrastructure and capacity for innovation, poising the country for phenomenal growth. New smart cities and industrial clusters are being developed in several industrial corridors. These smart cities and industrial clusters offer connectivity, new youth-focused programs and institutions dedicated to developing specialized skills. Most importantly, the Make in India program represents an attitudinal shift in how India relates to investors, making it a true business partner and marking a break with the infamous License-Raj system.

Meanwhile Swedish companies are global leaders in many of the areas vital to India’s growth. Sweden also shares many key values with India, such as democracy, respect for diversity and a commitment to protecting the environment. New smart cities and industrial clusters are being developed in special industrial corridors. The 5 Industrial Corridors project is creating the much-needed industrial infrastructure required for investments in India. The project also aims to develop new greenfield manufacturing cities, logistics hubs and residential townships along these corridors. India’s smart cities will incorporate the philosophies of sustainability, connectivity and development. Each manufacturing city will provide excellent infrastructure, convenient public transport, dynamic power management and an efficient water and waste management system. The Indian government’s new and innovative Smart Cities Mission is targeted at driving economic growth and improving the population’s quality of life by enabling local development and harnessing sustainable technology. 98 cities across India have been selected for the first phase of the project. It is crucial that we find sustainable transport solutions for people and goods while also acknowledging the importance of mobility for environmentally friendly growth and development. India now has the opportunity to learn from Western failures and successes. For instance India’s challenges in waste management present the opportunity to begin producing either biogas or fuel for incineration plants. The country must make the most of its challenges and opportunities in order to leverage global experience for the goal of sustainable mobility.
