Event Details
Economical Growth is traditionally linked with increasing demands of energy and growing amounts of waste. The use of fossil fuels and enlargement of landfills increases the climate change and have negative impact on the environment. For maintaining economical growth in a long term perspective the environmental impact must be recognized and reduced.
WORLD-CLASS REGIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
Sweden has been rather successful in a transformation towards a high degree of recycling and use of renewable energy sources. In the Gothenburg region there is a range of collection systems intended to utilise waste and recycle it into new material, used to generate electricity or heat or to produce vehicle fuel.
CHALLANGES CAN BECOME OPPORTUNITIES
India’s challenges in waste management can become opportunities with the right designs, models and technologies. An exchange of knowhow and experiences between Sweden and India in the field of Waste Management would benefit both in developing technological solutions for sustainability and a greener, longer lasting planet.
In this seminary, focusing on waste management system a panel of expertise from different sectors in the city of Gothenburg is invited as well as expertise from India. Together they will talk about and explore the possibilities and challenges of waste management in sustainable future cities.

Event Details
Since the launch of ‘Make in India’ programme in September 2014, Prime Minister Modi’s government has taken multiple steps to make Indian industry more conducive to foreign investment, and to encourage technology sharing between international OEMs and Indian companies. The purpose is to create job opportunities, provide a boost to the manufacturing sector, and better secure India, internally and on the borders.
Swedish industry has a rich history of collaborating with partner countries to help them develop an indigenous industrial base and boost their capabilities. This has invariably been done in a manner that is financially sound and equally beneficial for all parties involved, creating a sustainable legacy that helps the domestic industry grow even after the partnership has ended.
The timing is perfect for Swedish companies to establish relationships with Indian partners to co-develop and jointly manufacture for the Indian market as well as for exports. India’s defence and aerospace industry is undergoing a rapid shift towards the use of high-technology systems, an area where Sweden has traditionally excelled – and Swedish government and industry can play a large role in supporting the Make in India mission.

Event Details
India understands it has a problem with pollution and is eager to tackle this problem going forward. This is an important reasons for the Indian Governments interest in Scania’s work on biofuels and sustainable transport systems. Swedfund and Scania has now entered into a partnership to produce biofuel from sludge in the city of Nagpur. Nagpur is the pilot city for testing sustainable transport systems and a part of the Indian Governments Smart Cities project.
India is the 7th largest country in the world covering an area of 3.5 million square km and has a population of 1.2 billion. According to 2011 census figures, 30 percent of India’s population lives in urban areas and the rate of urbanization is growing steadily due to the push/pull effects of employment opportunities and the declining viability of the agricultural sector. This in addition to the fact that India now has the 4th largest economy in the world – $4.463 trillion (2011 est.), has resulted in a large and growing movement of goods, services, and people fueled by trade and employment opportunities – almost all of which is powered by fossil fuels.
The increase in emissions form traffic along with inadequate infrastructure facilities is responsible for high levels of local pollutants and GHGs in several of these cities. With the growing air pollution and GHG emissions from the transport sector in cities and at the national level, regulatory agencies will have to find real solutions, especially in terms of managing traffic in cities and freight at the national level.
The City of Nagpur, State of Maharashtra in India, have been appointed a pilot city for solutions to handle urban transport and mobility.
As part of this Scania and Swedfund has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for construction of a biogas plant in the city. The MOU envisions that a biogas plant, creating biogas fuel from waste, will be set up. The biogas will be utilised to run the vehicles, especially city buses.

Current global urbanisation trends will result in 70% of the population living in cities by 2050, and given the increasing social and environmental challenges, it is imperative that we learn how best to develop, govern and manage integrated and sustainable cities. The new Indian government 2014 launched the initiative to build 100 Smart cities all across India. In 2015 the first Smart cities will be identified and receive funding. Sweden is one of the pioneering countries when it comes to developing Smart cities based on collaboration between private and public actors. Swedish companies offer state-of-the-art solutions for Smart grids, Traffic and Transportation, Air, Waste and Water Management, Information and Communication and Smart Living. With a selection of contemporary design objects, studio Design Temple, traces parallel inspirations from India’s past to display the ingenuity of this 5000–year-old civilization.
The art of everyday life from India’s past highlights a synthesis of form, function and material that is embedded into the evolution of their design, over hundreds of years. As an integral part of everyday life, objects act as cultural conveyors. And this visual dialogue between the old and new, throws light on India’s people and their way of life.
Positioned at the crossroad of globalization and an ancient design culture, India Past Forward is fortuitously timed as Twenty-first century India brims with opportunity for the future.
The higher you need to go, the deeper must be the foundation.
With this belief studio Design Temple, presents India Past Forward A visual dialogue between Objects from India’s past and present.
